Hello friends. Thanks for checking out this week’s blog. Let’s get right to what’s floating around in my noggin.
The trailer for Star Wars Episode VII is out and it looks amazing. I have high hopes for it. Mind, I also had high expectations for Episode I and while I don’t loathe that movie like some do, it wasn’t GREAT.
There has been a LOT of talk on the webz since the trailer was released, particularly as it pertains to Luke and Rey. There’s also been some controversy about Finn that just makes me sad. Today I decided I’d share my two cents about Luke and Rey because why not?
As far as Luke’s absence is concerned, from what little I think I know of the plot, I believe the search for Luke Skywalker is a key plotline. If this is indeed the case, it would really ruin the reveal in the movie to show him in the trailer (or in the poster). I think it really is that simple. I don’t think he’ll turn out to be evil even though apparently Mark Hamill lobbied for it in the past. To be honest, that story is the strongest sign that Luke ISN’T evil. Given how secretive they’ve been about the movie, I can’t imagine anyone would have been okay with that story being released if Luke WAS going to be evil.
The popular theory is that Rey is Han and Leia’s daughter. Based on what little I saw in the trailer, I can’t see how that works. The trailer shows a scene with Rey, Finn and Han where Rey asks about the stories and Han answers they’re all true. Now, if Rey were Han’s daughter, why would he (and Leia) have waited so long to tell her the truth about something as major as the Jedi being real? Even if they agreed to keep quiet about it in public, I would think they’d at least tell their DAUGHTER the truth about her uncle. Now don’t get me wrong, I can think of plenty of reasons they could use, I just think all of them are terrible.
The last thing that I thought was interesting came from the poster instead of the trailer. The layout and posing of Kylo Ren and Rey is such that at first glance it almost looks like Rey is holding the red lightsaber (traditionally the weapon of the Sith/Dark Jedi) instead of the carbine/staff she actually is holding. Was this placement coincidental? Maybe, but it got people talking.
Okay so that’s all for this week. Please share your thoughts about Episode VII in the comments below. Have a good seven and we’ll do this all again next Monday. Carja V
