Flashback Friday – Iron Cat

Hello and good day to you friends! It be Friday and that can only mean a new Flashback! Let us see what we shall see, shall we?

So this week, we jump back to the release of the Avengers and the set of mash-ups I drew based on the designs featured in the movie.

For the first look back at the Avengers, I decided to go with Sass as Iron Cat since I hadn’t featured any redoes of Sass designs yet. The first time around, I had her holding the Iron Man helmet. This time I simply used layers to draw her with and without the helmet on. My characters don’t have fingers so I tried to include a paw pad on the power gloves. I’ll say that making things look “techy” still isn’t a strong suit but the result is still striking to me. As always, you can click on any picture to embiggen it.

Here’s the comparison with the original. You’ll notice that this time I remembered to give her a tail. I also chose a different armor design. There have been so many. Sass is more serious about being Iron Cat this time around or has she become blasé?

X-Furs Issue #2

It’s that time of week again, when the Animus Funnies merge with pop culture icons to produce MASH-UPS! This week, we conclude our look at Marvel’s X-Men. Let’s get right to it! As always, click to embiggen.

Professor Cyran Xavier is a strong believer in mutant rights, being a mutant himself (if only he could figure out how to unglue the wrench from his paw). It is he who assembled the X-Furs to assist him in his quest for good. I chose Professor X’s hover-chair specifically so I wouldn’t have to draw wheels.

Redcrawler has the power to teleport himself from place to place. Here he is appearing with a BAMF.

Deelocke is a martial artist with psychic powers which she can manifest among other ways as a psychic knife and her butterfly shaped psycho-blast.

Finally, we have Zoenix. Formerly known as the mutant mouse Zoë Gray, the Zoenix came into being when Zoë merged with the Phoenix force given her a huge power boost that she ultimately could not control. I really dig how the fiery phoenix effect turned out.

Greetings Animusians (trying out names),

For this week’s mash-ups, I chose the X-Men. At first, I was going to call them the A-Men, you know because prayer humor is cool. But I don’t use the word “Man” in Age of Animus so I had to throw that sweet pun out. I switched to A-Furs, but that was too far removed from the original name so I’m using X-Furs.

I’m enjoying trying new things as I explore different themes. In the Street Fighter mash-ups it was fighting stances and poses. This week, I’m further exploring the effects I started using in the Masters of the Universe mash-ups. Be sure to click to embiggen the pictures for a clearer view.

First up, we have the leader of the X-Men, Oonch-clops.Here he is firing optic blasts through his ruby visor.

The first preview I put up featured Mouser. I didn’t get see any guesses on Facebook as to who he was supposed to be. The answer is Kitty Pryde’s pet alien dragon, Lockheed. Kitty Pryde’s code name is Shadowcat and who’s the shadiest cat in Bree? Sass of course! Here she is phasing through a wall while Mouseheed opts rather to plow through it. I’m not rightly sure how I managed the dust effect, because I haven’t been able to duplicate it since.

The second preview sketch I put up on Facebook was of Nektara. I left out the X on her belt to make the theme less obvious. In full colour, I hope that it’s clear I was gunning for Rogue. Nektarogue is a lot less gimmicky, but I really like how the pose worked out.

Gamrick is a wily cajun who likes to throw supercharged playing cards at his enemies.

Last up for this week is Barnassus, whose mutant power is to morph from fur to metal. He has a lot of the shiny metal techniques I used in the Masters of the Universe mash-ups.

More X-Furs next week (be warned, there will be no Wolverine).
