Flashback Friday – Tripwire

Hoo boy! It’s Friday! And that means that a four-day weekend is upon me…once I get through today that is. The first step towards that is posting a Flashback. Everything else should run smoothly after that.

As promised last week, this week’s flashback is Cyran dressed as Tripwire from G.I.JOE. Tripwire was one of my favorite Joe designs even though I never owned the action figure. I think it was the backpack with the individual mines. Mind you I would have lost those things in no time flat. I still thought they were cool though. Observant Joe fans will notice that I have Cyran holding the mine detector in his left paw instead of his right like Tripwire’s original card art. That’s because Cyran’s wrench is stuck to his left paw so the mine detector attachment had to go on the left. I actually found a flipped picture of Tripwire online to base the picture on. Here’s the feverishly awaited Fur card.

And here’s the comparison with the original mashup. I’ll say that of the early mashups, Tripbunny was one of my favorites except for the nose which I should have done a better job on.

Flashback Friday – The Bearoness

You know it’s not Thursday anymore when you check the site and see there’s a new flashback up. That’s Friday territory right there.

This week, Nektara is back as the Bearoness. Such a great pun don’t you agree? As always, click on a picture to enlarge it.

Here’s her action figure card. I redesigned the Kitty logo again. I shouldn’t need to do another redesign for a while.

Here’s the comparison piece. The original Bearoness was probably one of the better mash-ups from the early days.

I’ve got a rough schedule set for which flashbacks I have left to do. It turns out I had some catching up to do on G.I.Joe/Cobra, so there’s going to be a few more showing up in the next couple of weeks. Next week, Cyran is back as Tripwire!

Flashback Friday – Scarlett

Friday morning: Better than Thursday morning, but not quite up to the standard of Saturday morning. Discuss. Or check out this week’s flashback.

This week it’s back to G.I.Joe.

Here’s Zoë dressed up as Scarlett.

I really like making the cards for the action figures. Zoë’s was a little more challenging than usual in that MyPaint kept crashing when I was attempting to fill in the black background and adding the explosion. The picture was just too big. When I start a new mashup, I fill the screen with the basic shape of the head. In Zoë’s case, I fill the screen with just one ear. This means that her pictures turn out much larger than anybody else’s and cause a much bigger drain on my system’s resources as a result. MyPaint doesn’t have a feature to resize a picture (or none that I can find). I have to use GIMP since it’s the only other software I’ve found that supports .ora files. Crazy stuff. I’m happy with the results though. When I was making my postcard designs I redid the layout of Oonch-Ho’s card to fit the dimensions of the postcard better. I’m using that as the new template for the cards.

Finally, we have the comparison with the original mashup. It looks like I had the same starting pose, but I went with a different uniform the first time around. I don’t know where the old one is from. I guess it must have been from the comics.

Flashback Friday – Major Bear

Good morning. Enjoying your Friday so far? Great! Here’s a flashback to make it even better!

I’m changing up the scheduled order of my flashbacks. You’ll find out why next week. For now, let’s delve back into the ranks of Cobra’s high command. As always, you can click on any picture to enlarge it.

Colour-wise, Barnaby isn’t a great choice for Major Bludd, since his fur is brown and Bludd’s uniform is brown as well. I tried my best to make the two colours distinct. The helmet gave me a surprising amount of trouble. I can’t really figure out why.

Continuing the tradition of designing the complete action figure card, here’s Major Bear’s.

And here’s the comparison to the original piece. Do you know that it was only when I put the two pictures side by side that I realized that I totally forgot to give Barnaby the eye patch the first time around. How embarrassing! 🙂 I did a much better job of posing his legs this time around so it doesn’t look like he’s just dangling in mid-air.

Flashback Friday – Lady Jaye

I was in the sleep zone. I didn’t want to wake up this morning. But here I am all the same. Let’s try to get past this with a flashback, alright? Cool.

Whenever I sit down to draw a flashback the first thing I do is look back at which characters have been featured the least and then choose which themes those characters have left to be revisited to decide what I most want to draw. This week it was Sass’s turn and I chose to do her G.I.Joe flashback.

I briefly dallied with the idea of switching characters for Sass’s flashback. I thought I might go with a more recent addition to the Joe team, Agent Helix. I thought I might be able to do something nice with that costume but there was no artwork I wanted to base myself on for it, so I decided to stick with Lady Jaye. Lady Jaye’s original action figure wore a cap. In the cartoon, they decided, for the better, to ditch that element. I drew Sass first without the cap, but then to better reflect the card art, I added a layer for the cap. I like her better without. What do you think?
