It’s that time of week again! Celebrate Wednesdays the Animus way: With a mashup! First though:

Ranma 1/2 is an anime that is aimed at an older audience. The mash-ups featured here are 100% safe for children of all ages, but parental discretion is advised before viewing the anime or reading the manga with children.

“Wait! Is it not custom to give one’s OWN name first?
Fine then! Mine I shall give!
I am the undefeated captain of this school’s kendo club;
A rising new star in the high school fencing world!
The sound of my name strikes fear into the hearts of my enemies!
My peers call me the Blue Thunder of Furinkan High!
Tatewaki Kuno, age 17.”

“Did he just call himself Blue Thunder?”

“News to me. Last I heard he was calling himself Shooting Star…”

Kuno is the first of Ranma’s rivals for Akane’s affections. On the first day of the school semester he made a speech that whosoever wants to date Akane must defeat her in combat. Even though she in no way agreed to this, every morning Akane has to fight her way through a mob of challengers hoping to be the one to date her. Ranma earns Kuno’s ire by being too familiar with Akane in his presence. His devotion to Akane is absolute…so long as the pig-tailed girl, isn’t around. Kuno never manages to figure out that his equally-beloved pig-tailed girl and Ranma are one and the same. Here’s Cyran as Kuno in the normal style and with an anime-inspired face. I think his eyes turned out the best of all the anime eyes I’ve drawn so far. Those of you thinking Cyran looks an awful lot like Usagi Yojimbo, I agree. For funsies, I also added some lightning as appears in Kuno’s dramatic introduction.

I like Wednesday. It’s a good day. Especially every other Wednesday because I get paid. Something good that’s EVERY Wednesday is mashup time. So yeah, it’s that time! First though:

It’s Ranma again this week. Today we have Nektara as Akane Tendo. Akane is the youngest of Soun Tendo’s three daughters. She’s a skilled martial artist and that’s one of the reasons she’s chosen to be Ranma’s fiancée, Not that she’s happy about it. She’s really a good person except she has a fierce temper. One other warning: she cannot cook. We’re talking Deema levels of bad food here! Akane is most likely who I was thinking of when the idea for Deema being a bad cook came to mind. To continue the trend for this set, I’ve included an “anime-face” version as well. If taken alone, the eyes look good, but on my characters there’s just something off. Wednesday has long been the friend of mash-ups! How long you ask? As far back as 2012! Wow, right?

Anyway, let’s get back to this week’s mash-ups. But first:

Last week, we met Ranma Saotome, heir to the Anything Goes School of Martial Arts. His father, Genma Saotome is a gifted martial artist in his own right. Here’s Barnaby dressed up as Genma. As with Ranma last week, I also drew an “anime-style” face for him.

“Wait a minute! Hold on! Didn’t you say last week, that Ranma’s father was a panda?!”

Why yes. Yes I did. See Genma also fell into one of the cursed springs of Jusenkyo. As a result, whenever he’s doused with cold water, he takes the form of a panda. Unable to speak, he communicates with signs. I should be up front. I did the most cursory of searches for a translation of the word “derp”. The translator came up with ダープ which translates to daapu. My apologies if it turns out daapu is offensive in Japanese.

It’s Wednesday. I went to bed 15 minutes earlier than usual last night and I woke up 15 minutes later than usual. So sleepy. What’ll wake me up? I know! A new mashup!

It’s always fun to unveil a new theme. This new theme has given me some pause. I’ll discuss why in next week’s blog. For now, let me just speak to the younger folks around. Ranma 1/2 is a series for older kids (teens and up). The mashups are safe (of course), but parental discretion is advised if you’re going to watch the show or read the manga.

Here’s Red Rich as the titular character from the series, Ranma Saotome. He’s a brash 16-year-old who’s training to be a formidable martial artist. While training in China, he triggered a strange curse. When doused with cold water, he turns into a girl. Only hot water will turn him back again. His brash behaviour attracts him a fair number of admirers but also rivals looking to defeat him. Oh, and his father’s a panda. I don’t really like giving wigs to the boys unless it’s really important to the mashup character’s look. I did give Rich the pigtail though.

Since this is an anime theme, I decided to try something different this time. I’m drawing each character with “anime eyes”. It really changes the look.
